Access

To reach all the via ferratas in the gorge, you must travel to Weißenbach in Ramsau and take the road to Silberkarklamm, where you will find a parking lot at the end of a gravel road. If you are using public transport, take the train to Schladming and then take Bus Line 960 to Ramsau Stierer. From there, change to Bus Line 962 and continue to Rössing Silberkarklamm and then on foot. The starting point for the via ferrata is easily accessible from the parking lot.

Approach to start

From the parking lot, follow the path uphill to the entrance of the Silberkarklamm gorge. Climb up the first ladders until you reach a flat area with rocks and benches. From there, you will find the beginning of the via ferrata, marked by a yellow sign.

The route

The route is named after the founder and builder of the gorge path, Matthias Erlbacher, and has a difficulty level of D. The vertical ascent is 130 meters on the ferrata and 220 meters in total. The estimated time for the approach is 10 minutes, the duration on the ferrata is 1 hour, and the descent takes around 30 minutes, making the total estimated time for the route 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Descent

At the end of the via ferrata, climb up briefly, and then follow the red markings, which lead you to Trail 619. Follow this trail down to the gorge and return to the starting point through it, or alternatively, take a right turn uphill to the Silberkarhütte (Silberkar hut).

Good to know

  • Don’t unclip to avoid the last steep step on the left because you risk falling.
  • The gorge is privately owned by the Erlbacher family and the entrance is paid.
